Mrs. Newby discusses healthy habits with students

This week, Mrs. Newby, one of our counselors, taught grades 3-5 about making healthy choices with an activity she called "Say Boo to Bad Choices." This lesson served to teach students about making healthy choices in our lives and saying no to peer pressure.

She began in the classroom where she talked about peer pressure, healthy choices, and unhealthy choices. Then, she took students on a guided scavenger hunt around the building. During this scavenger hunt, students learned about the impact their choices have and why it's so important to live a healthy lifestyle.

This lesson not only addresses our Leader in Me Habit of the Month: Habit #2, Begin with the End in Mind, but it helps to setup Red Ribbon Week which will happen later this month.

Red Ribbon Week takes place annually in late October and helps to raise awareness of the dangers of alcohol, tobacco, and drug use. It promotes healthy choices and drug-free lifestyles for children and adults and it encourages community involvement in drug prevention efforts.

This year's theme is "Life Is A Puzzle, Solve It Drug Free!" This theme was chosen because living a drug-free lifestyle helps in building a stronger, brighter future. It shows that each positive choice someone makes contributes a vital piece to the larger picture of a successful life. Red Ribbon week runs the week of October 27th. Each day of our 3-day week will include a spirit day aimed at spreading awareness. Look out for more information from Mrs. Newby and Mrs. Kircher in the coming weeks.
